I am one of many who stood on the very periphery of Dick Israel's life, coming to "know" him only through his writings. But I consider him one of my teachers and, not infrequently, have occasion to pass along, b'shem omro, his wonderful insights into the wonders and foibles of Jewish life. The experience of Sukkot would not be quite the same for me if I did not revisit each year Rabbi Israel's essay on "Jews and Wasps".
"The Kosher Pig" sits close at hand on my bookshelf, a valuable tool and a reminder of someone who obviously touched so many lives and who gave to so many a model of Yiddishkeit to emulate.
Zecher tzadik l'vracha.
