Personal Remembrances

On Sunday, July 16, 2000, this email went out on the Newton Center Minyan email list:

Dear Friends,

This morning, at the shivah for Dick Israel, a few of us decided to start collecting stories, memories and quotations from his many friends and colleagues. The family welcomed the idea, and we're starting right now, while memories of our friend and teacher are still fresh.

We hope you'll send us whatever you wish -- a story, a quotation from Dick, a teaching or a lesson you learned from him (no matter how big or small), some advice he may have offered, a comment he made that stayed with you, or anything else that might express how he touched your life -- or perhaps even changed it. Feel free to send as many items as you like -- either all at once, or as you happen to think of them.

It would be great if we could hear from you soon -- perhaps even during the next few days in a kind of cyber-shivah. If that's not possible, or you'd like a little more time, we hope you'll respond by the end of July. (Later is all right too, if July just isn't feasible.) If you can think of other people who should see this mailing, please forward it to them.

We don't know yet how all of this material will be written up and distributed. But it would help if you could include your name and mailing address.

Many emails came in, and copies of most are posted here in a random order (probably related to the order they were received).

The emails were left unedited, except to follow the Internet custom of removing email addresses, physical addresses, and phone numbers in an attempt to provide privacy from unsolicited emailers. The original email was sent by Bill Novak, so people often addressed him in their replies. To keep from editing their words, and to keep the original flavor, those references to Bill are left in.

Each letter is on a separate web page titled with the author's name and they are linked together with "Next" and "Previous" links.
