Many years ago at a point early in my career when I was looking to change
positions, I went to see Dick Israel at the BU Hillel for a consultation. I
had been an assistant rabbi for several years and was considering a move to
another assistantship. Rabbi Israel gave me one simple piece of advice that
has stuck with me ever since. He said, in undoubtedly more eloquent words,
"Determine whether or not the senior rabbi is a lamed vav-nik. If he is,
then take the position. If he isn't, look somewhere else."
